Who Is the Jailer & Why Is He Imprisoned? - Shadowlands Spoilers.

So we have some new information on who the Jailer actually is, what is his name, what is his purpose and what he wants. Turns out he isn't really so black and white, he isn't just this greatest evil of all time that wants to consume everything or at least it isn't so obvious and there is more depth to his character.

Keep in mind there heavy spoilers in this video, so without further ado who is the Jailer and why is he imprisoned? As we've recently found out there are brand new beings known as the Eternal Ones and they are collectively known as the Pantheon of Death.

Their power is titan like and you could loosely call them the death titans. Obviously, they don't use the same power, but it is possible how you have titans of order, void lords of the void you also have titans of the death realm. These guys are all tied to the First ones which at the moment we know so little about.

Apparently, the First ones are godlike figures that most likely predate both the titans and the death pantheon and could be the oldest powers in the universe. Maybe the First ones existed before the explosion happened and all the forces were formed and now they are a relict of the past, of course, this is just pure speculation.

So far we know about 6 eternal ones. You have the Arbiter which is not related to any covenant but seems to be one of the most important if not the most important one. There is Kyrestia of Bastion, Winter Queen of Ardenweald, Sire Denathrius of Revendreth, Primus of Maldraxxus and ultimately Zovaal of the Maw.

Zovaal is the real name of the Jailer and the new information reveals that he isn't just a bad guy but that there is much more going on behind the scenes. A message from the Primus of Maldraxxus who is missing says that ages ago Zovaal had betrayed all the other eternal ones and for that treachery, his realm was formed where he would be kept forever, this realm is obviously the Maw.

Now we don't know whether the covenants existed before or they were all formed at that point, but we've found out that the main point of all these realms is to gather anima, soul energy and essentially use it to keep the Jailer confined. This could mean the main purpose of the Shadowlands isn't for eternal life but literally a device to keep Zovaal imprisoned.

Of course, this might just be an oversimplification but from what we've learned if it isn't the primary purpose it is definitely the secondary. What did he do that was so bad, how he has betrayed them we have no idea at this point. Maybe the eternal ones battled someone else and Zovaal sabotaged them or defected, we just don't know.

Now even more spoilers it turns out Primus the ruler of Maldraxxus found out about the Jailer's scheme about how he was attempting to break free, he went to search for clues and has been missing for quite some time, either a very long time or that entire happened recently as Draka mentions him.

He leaves messages for us, messages that would mean his plan failed and he tells us to unite with the rest of the eternal ones to keep the Jailer in check but it turns out that some have already defected. Denathrius of Revendreth had already started working for the Jailer and has been pumping him up with anima, Devos the Kyrian that threw Arthas indirectly into the Maw also started working for the Jailer.

Then from the lesser forces, we know Sylvanas and her entire plan, Kel'Thuzad is also a major player as well as Helya. Primus seems to be one of the big guys from these eternal ones and he left a few hints that the arbiter must be protected at all costs and that the Jailer can't reach the sepulchre which we don't know at the moment what it is.

Some speculate that it is all the knowledge of warfare in Maldraxxus and that does make sense. If the Jailer got that he could defeat his foes and defect but it is possible that it is something entirely different. However, people have started to defect and Jailer has grown more powerful than ever before.

What if after all he isn't just the big evil bad guy and he might just be morally grey. Devos realized that the path of the Kyrians is flawed, so this could be similar to the entire light and void dichotomy of how one isn't evil or good and how both have bad and good sides.

For example, before we thought the Light was this pure thing but recently we've found out that they literally enslave people are can be fanatical. The key to figuring this out will be finding out what exactly Zovaal did, how has he betrayed them, were they fighting against someone what was going on? Actually, you can draw a parallel here of the titan pantheon and Sargeras and how the titans imprisoned Sargeras after he went rogue and lost his mind for thousands of years.

Maybe the Jailer was Sargeras before Sargeras, maybe he did even worse things or maybe he wasn't even so bad and the other eternal ones could be the ones that are wrong. Honestly, I'm super excited to learn what is going on behind all of this. At the moment all we have is tiny bits and pieces and we are just very loosely connecting them, but once Shadowlands progresses and we actually get inside we are going to really learn who Zovaal is and why he was imprisoned within the Maw.
