FIFA 21 VS PES 2021: the challenge begins!

FIFA 21 against eFootball PES 2021. A challenge that is repeated every year to the delight of all football fans who can find in the annual comparison between the two football simulations a useful competition to improve them both. At least in theory, because as the past teaches us there was no shortage of missteps for the two contenders, as well as the years of rebirth in which the equilibrium seen in the field up to that moment was reversed. This year FIFA 21 will arrive on both old and new platforms, offering some new features dedicated to the upcoming hardware and others available immediately. eFootball PES 2021 will instead be represented by a Season Update based on the excellent eFootball PES 2020, with respect to which some news are still coming. Waiting to try them firsthand, here is a first comparison, based on the information known to date, on licenses, modes, gameplay and graphics. The challenge between FIFA and PES starts with the licensing of real teams and leagues. A challenge fought annually to the sound of official and exclusive agreements, like the one that last year led eFootball PES 2020 to win the chance to be the only game to represent Juventus under its name together with the Allianz Stadium. Speaking of renewed licenses, the postponement of EURO 2020 to next year will also give PES 2021 all the updates dedicated to the national teams involved, allowing its owners not to lose the atmosphere of the competition. Serie A and B will receive free updates to the running season in October, while in terms of individual clubs, the official agreements with Inter and Milan have expired and have not been renewed: for this reason the two Milanese clubs will appear in the game with the names Milano RN and Lombardia NA. To join the family of the Konami title will instead be Roma and the Olympic Stadium, present together with Juventus as exclusives of eFootball PES 2021. There will also be all the major European leagues with attached stadiums, as well as the possibility of counting on continental competitions such as the Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. In numerical and qualitative terms, the offer of FIFA 21 is therefore superior to that of eFootball PES 2021, which, however, with the European Championships and the renewed exclusive presence of Juventus and Barcelona with their respective stadiums can still boast a certain charm. Plus, you can count on the usual options files to make the PS4 and PC versions 100% complete. When you think of FIFA 21 online, your thoughts obviously go straight to Ultimate Team. Despite the presence of other multiplayer modes, FUT is in fact the point of reference for those who want to become part of a three hundred and sixty degrees experience, which starts from the customization of the aesthetic elements that distinguish their team to get to the players that compose it. A mode often criticized for the presence of microtransactions, on which EA Sports has a clear philosophy. The intention of the developers for this year is to make it attractive even for less competitive players, proposing alternatives that can offer satisfactions also in terms of rewards. The arrival of the two-on-two mode is part of this perspective, as well as the decision to eliminate the fitness and training cards, which over time have become a burden for players. eFootball PES 2021 responds without particular news, given that at least as far as we know its Season Update will not intervene on the game modes. For those who want to play online, the MyClub mode will always be available, an alternative to FUT that does not reach the same level of depth and fame. The team working on FIFA 21 has also focused on improving the Career mode, introducing some rather significant innovations. New options for transfers are also on the way, including the highly sought-after loan with the right of redemption. Also in this case PES 2021 will respond in the same way as last year. The Master League is still the reference of many fans over the years and could even bring some news, starting with the already confirmed new managers, Pep Guardiola included. Over the last few years FIFA and PES have moved towards two very distinct ways of conceiving football simulation: EA Sports's is more immediate and spectacular, and Konami's more realistic and reasoned. At the end of the generation it is difficult to imagine a change of philosophy, especially in the case of PES: the dynamics seen last year were already very solid, so the choice of the Season Update certainly makes sense. However, there may also be some changes to the gameplay, in particular with regard to the management of the game by the referees and collisions between players. Even in the case of FIFA 21, one should not expect an upheaval, but a refinement of the gameplay that characterized its predecessor. New animations, Creative Run and the renewed dribbling system promise to make football according to Electronic Arts even more spectacular. With the new generation now upon us, it is difficult to imagine particular steps forward for the versions of FIFA and PES dedicated to the current platforms. Starting from the basics of last year, eFootball PES 2021 has a slight advantage given the traditional representation of a greater number of players' faces within the series. The arrival of FIFA 21 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, however, deserves a completely separate discussion: for an equal comparison from this point of view, however, we will have to wait for next year, with the release of PES 2022 on the new consoles. Also for this reason, Konami's choice to land on the market with a Season Update appears decidedly wise, but it leaves EA Sports time to catch up on the aspects where it was further behind. Different speech for the nextgen, where FIFA 21 will have practically no rivals.

FIFA 21 will arrive on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 9, 2020, with a legacy edition with no big news for Nintendo Switch.

PES 2021 Season Update, on the other hand, will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One as early as September 15th. What do you think of this year's episodes? And what will your choice be?
