Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga DS Review - 16 Bit Game Review.

Hello and Welcome, As a kid I was absolutely in love with Star Wars, the Nintendo DS was the greatest gaming console of all time, and my love for LEGO was immeasurable. If you were to combine all 3 elements you would have your hands on an extraordinarily happy Andre.

And I was, Lego Star Wars II for the Nintendo DS was probably one of the greatest games you could have ever given me. I enjoyed it glitches and all. But when I heard that the sequel Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga was coming out for the Nintendo DS.

Well you could have just imagined my excitement. But when I actually got my hands on the game that Christmas, it wasn't as I was imagining it to be. I was actually so disappointing in the Complete Saga back then that, I actually burred in my game collection, never to be seen again.

So today I thought it would be fun to get myself a new copy, so I can take a look back at the Complete Saga and see, why I was so disappointed with this game. Check our games from us at 16 Bit Games! Up to that point my experience with Lego Star Wars was with the console games made by Traveler's Tale and Lego Star Wars II for the Nintendo DS which was contracted out to Amaze Entertainment.

I was never really a fan of the console games, and preferred the DS game. Mostly because of how restrictive they felt, like the with limited number of characters in free play mode. So I was hopping for Amaze to be able to pull it off again on the DS, but this time adding in the prequel levels, characters, and fixing all the bugs the existed in Lego Star Wars II But for unknown reasons, Amaze Entertainment was not contracted to develop the Complete Saga.

For the first time Traveler's Tale, decided to use an in house studio, to port their console games. A recently acquired at the time game studio that they called TT Fusion. As a result of the developer change, the Complete Saga had to be built from the ground up, and is sadly completely different from my beloved Lego Star Wars II.

And it's obvious when you start a new game. To me, back then and even today, there's something just wrong about the way game looks. and the way the game feels. the LEGO models aren't right when you compare them with actual LEGO. they way they move, and the way they feel, they way...

It's just something is wrong. Something just doesn't feel right. And it's only gets a little worse, when you start a level. It's obvious that TT Fusion tried their best to port as much of the console games over as possible even including the cutscenes.

Which would have been a massive improvement over the original Lego Star Wars II for DS. But the only problem though is that the cutscenes just look terrible. Instead of using in game models or pre-rendered cutscenes, here they used pre-rendered pictures, and hand animate small sections of it like a paper puppet show.

And from what I can remember, my younger self didn't want to give the game the time or day afterwards. These cutscenes are distracting. They almost force you to start looking for issues throughout the cutscenes. And when you start every single level off with this mentality, you bring it into the level with you.

And while you are walking around these not bad stages, you start looking around for flaws and you will find them. Little issues here, corners cut there, and annoying gameplay trends here and there. And you start getting a very bad taste every time you think of this game.

Which is quite sad to say, since there is more going on here than you'd actually realize. Now that I have played through the Complete Saga going back to the DS game I started noticing a few more details. The level design are compressed down 2.5D representations of their console titles.

But the amount of set pieces, locations, and dressing they were able to add in, is absolutely insane. The levels are actually well designed and fun to play through. Even the 2D top down sections for the vehicles, are actually quite fun to play through.

Minus one or two levels. Overall the game is fine, in fact it's quite enjoyable if you can get past the cutscenes. But for myself it's so hard to do that, that when I start a level it's pretty difficult to not to go and ask. Why did they shoehorn this mini game here, why is this pointless touch controls added there.

And it just brings down this whole experience. So if the game was fun, why didn't I like it? Well I think it's because the Complete Saga, wasn't the first LEGO game on DS. For me there already was a president for what a Lego Star Wars game can look like, and play like, on the Nintendo DS.

And because of that, I can see where the corners were cut. Lego Star Wars II for the DS, might have been a buggier game. But it's still a solid LEGO game. It understands what LEGO should look like, how LEGO should act and how people interact with LEGO both inside and outside the game.

And it does all of this without distracting the player, to much, while they are playing the game. The Complete Saga on the other hand, doesn't do any of this, and is more focused on trying to port the console game to the DS. And as a result the game is just distracting as a LEGO title.

The models don't look like LEGO, they don't act like LEGOs and I don't feel like I am interacting with LEGOs inside the game, and as a result, Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga is a bad LEGO game. Which disappointed my younger self at the time. But looking at it now-a-days, and looking at it as a game, not a LEGO game, just a game.

It has solid levels, solid gameplay, and I'm going to be blunt, a lot better gameplay wise than Lego Star Wars II for the DS. It's still not my cup of tea, don't get me wrong. But it's a good game none the less. But is the Complete Saga worth getting today for the Nintendo DS? At the price point that I've seen it at, it isn't a bad choice, but in my view there are better options out on the market.

At the same price bracket, if you wanted a better game you can easily get Lego Star Wars II for the PSP, and for a few dollars more, or waiting until a steam sale you can just get the Complete Saga on PC, and play it on a Laptop. But regardless on what option your going to get, you'll get a fun, and stable experience.

But for myself, I'm probably not going to pick this game up, in fact if I wanted to play Lego Star Wars on the go, I'm just going to wait a little bit longer and get the Skywalker Saga, when it eventually comes out for the Nintendo Switch. But anyways, thank you very much for watching this video, I hope you've enjoyed it.
