Genji: Days of the Blade (PS3) Review and Gameplay.

Hello Everyone, my name is Vladislav and i glad to have you here on my Channel. So in today's video, we going to take a look close at "Genji: Days of the Blade" Which is a sequel to 2005, PlayStation 2 exclusive title "Genji: Dawn of the Samurai" "Genji: Days of the Blade" was developed by "Game Republic" and released by "Sony" in 2006 for PlayStation 3 Where is still remain as exclusive title until these days. Just like previous game, "Genji: Days of the Blade" is an Action/Adventure Slasher type of game And it plays very similar to "Onimusha" or "Devil May Cry" series, but if PS2 "Genji: Dawn of the Samurai" gameplay was strongly reminded me of very 1st game in "Onimusha" series PS3 "Genji: Days of the Blade" looks and plays very similar to "Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams" Yeah, if you played those games, soon you will know what i mean. Events of "Genji: Days of the Blade" take place 3 years after events of previous game. Clan Heishi been defeated, and Yoshitsune Finally decides to reunite with his older brother Yoritomo, but before brothers even had chance for good conversation, Driven by New Villians, with demonic powers in their hands, the Heishi army has been reformed, and it's about to attack The Castle. Yeah, ofcourse very first video cutscene tries to explain most important events, that happened in previous game But to fully understand storyline of this one, first i suggest you to play PS2 "Genji: Dawn of the samurai" because otherwise, it will be nearly impossible to understand what is going on around. And also, since during this video i'm time to time going to compare both games, if you didn't played PS2 "Genji" yet I recommend to check out my "Full Playthrough" video about it, so link will be in video description. So army if Heishi attack the castle, everything is on fire And that's where actual gameplay begins. At start of game we play as Yoshitsune, which is as i said earlier, was main character in previous game Well... one of two. And game immediately welcomes us with the breathtaking view of the Flaming Castle, and awesome fast paced combat system. If you played previous game, with combat system in this one, you will be familiar with very first second as you press attack button. Game controls are remains same as it was in before, but with few new additions First off in this game, it became much easier to dodge enemy attacks, since all evasive movements, now performed by right analog stick only, and i tell you, that element i liked a lot. And second addition, that now it is possible to change between two equipped weapons by pressing L2 button, Which is also great, because with different weapons, characters can perform different types of attacks and combos. Aside of similar game controls and few other minor elements, "Genji: Days of the Blade" have a lots of new gaming elements, and 1st element is "Kamui" Yeah, this systen was main feature in previous game also, but as you can see, here it works absolutely differently. While in first game when player used "Kamui", time was slowed down, and player had to repel enemy attacks, In this one, as for me unfortunately, "Kamui" turned in simple "Quick Time Event" mini game. Although, sort of classic one is still present, since most of serious enemies and bosses now have their own "Kamui" gauge, and if they decide to use it, then player have to reflect attacks by pressing proper buttons, just like how it was in first game. In menu, now we have slightly different options from previous game The Armor System is no longer exist, and new weapon leveling system has taken it's place. When player defeats "Demonized" type of enemy, instead of coins, since there no shops anymore also He will recive "Mashogane" fragments, which can be used to level up weapons, once again, just like in "Onimusha" and "Devil May Cry"games. Characters themselves can be upgraded by two different ways 1st works similar to previous game, during adventure time to time we can find "Amahagane Essence", which are basically a hidden items, that scattered throughout game. So soon as player will find four shards, he can insert them into an "Amulet" And by doing that, we can upgrade character health bar, or "Kamui" gauge.

And 2nd way is, that after player will defeat final boss of each chapter He will be granted by special item, that will not only upgrade characteristics of all 4 main playable characters But wil also heal them, so this particular item, i suggest to use only in very dangerous situations. And now, speaking of main characters, i think now it's time to talk about them, and about main feature of this game. Remember i said PS2 "Genji" plays similar to 1st "Onimusha" games, and PS3 "Genji: Days of the Blade" plays more similar to "Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams" So there is actually a good reason for that. In previous game we had 2 playable characters, that you could switch only in between missions, or if player was currently on a mission, then it was possible to switch characters only at certain spots, And not possible at all to switch beween them during regular, or boss battle. In this game, we can switch between characters on the fly. Allmost at any time and especially during battles! And more than that, every character have it's own unique abilities Which allow player to overcome various obstacles, that he may encounter on his journey. So now, let's take a close look at our main characters.

And 1st is Yoshitsune Yoshitsune is our main hero in a "Genji" storyline He use a pair of swords as a weapon, and he is fastest character in game And Yoshitsune main ability is a double jump, long distance jumps and wall run. So basically in all locations, where you have to perform some platform jumping, you will play as Yoshitsune for the most time.

2nd character is Benkei Benkei is most strongest character in game, with ability not only to smash hordes of enemies, but other objects also. And as for me, this is the best character in game, especially when he equipped with very 1st weapon Because with this 1st weapon, Benkei can perform most powerful jump attack, that will crush everyone and everything nearby.

3rd character that i also like is Lady Shizuka In previous game Shizuka was part of main story, but sametime she wasn't playable character, but everything changed in this game. She have a very long distance attacks that maybe not that powerful, but at least she able to keep enemies far away And also she is great when dealing with something small, like spiders or birds. Her main ability is to cling to various objects, and pull herself towards them, so that way she can overcome a long distances.

And 4th one, is Buson If you played "Genji: Dawn of the Samurai" , you may notice that Buson strangely reminds of last boss of that game - Kagekiyo Well, that's because Buson is an "Overworld Spirit" that use Kagekiyo's body as a shell, in order to help out heroes to fight against Heishi clan. Buson use double bladed sword, and aside of additional wind type of attack, he does not have any special abilities, and as for me, i found myself to use him less, that any other character in this game. So now i think, i mostly explained all important gaming mechanics, and now it's time to talk about graphics and some other things, that i wanted to talk about. Graphically, game looks OK, and yeah i understand that game was released in 2006, so it was already long time ago, but still there is some moments that worth mentioning. First off, just like in previous game, video cutscenes in this one looks absolutely amazing! Not every new game have that high quality of image, and yeah this is insane. But unfortunately i can't say same things about cutscenes that are made on game engine. During character dialogs, or especially when they are moving fast, i was constantly noticed FPS drops on my PS3 slim model. It's ofcoure not gamebreaking, but still previous game didn't have any FPS drops. But at least i didn't noticed any FPS drops during gameplay, which is great, so cutscenes only, yeah... So graphics in game, in general as i said is OK Sometimes you may enter great looking areas, like this huge battlefield for example, where a lots of stuff are going on, and which is once again looks absolutely fantastic. But other time, and this refers for good half of all locations in game There will be just a corridors, like those that you already probably noticed during video. But well, "Genji: Days of the Blade" is an early PS3 title, so it holds very well. Also it worth to mention as i think biggest flaw of this game, which is ofcourse camera Oh my God, sometimes it can be so horrible, you can't even imagine And combine this with a platforming element that happens time to time in game, this may become your worst nightmare. But if you close eyes on those game flaws, "Genji: Days of the Blade" is a game, that definitely worth to be checked Just make sure, before you going to do so, it is better to beat PS2 "Genji" first Because otherwise, it's going to be very hard to catch up with storyline. But yeah, that was it for today, Thank You Everyone who did watch this video, especially till to the end!
